Skater XL’s newly revealed The Big Ramp map has a really, really big ramp in it

With Skater XL out just one week from now on 28th July, Easy Day Studios have revealed another map from their skating sim. Set in the Californian Desert, The Big Ramp is a dusty location with… a really big ramp in it.

OK, so there’s a little bit more to it than that, but every single feature of the map has been supersized to let you get the biggest air time possible and pull of the biggest jumps. It’s going to be a big change of pace compared to the other maps in the game at launch, which include Downtown Los Angeles, Easy Day High School, Grant Park Chicago and more.

The game has been in PC Early Access for a while now, with the studio iterating and improving on feedback from the community. Almost everything we’ve seen of the game so far has focussed on street skating, pulling tricks as you leap from the tops of stairs, grinding along handrails, that kind of thing. The Big Ramp is a rather different environment that allows for a focus on transition skating and more technical tricks.

Skater XL is just one game in a skateboarding game renaissance, hoping to recapture the magic and glory days of the Skate and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series, but forging its own path with a bespoke control scheme built form the ground up. They’ve got plenty of competition though. There’s fellow indie Early Access effort Session (which you can read more about in our gameplay preview), while Activision are remastering Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 for later this year, and EA have announced that they’re finally getting the band back together to create Skate 4, though that’s barely even in development yet.

Skate XL is the most immediately releasing of the lot, giving skating fans a fix this month. The game will be hitting version 1.0 and coming out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 28th July.
