Marvel’s Avengers update 1.30 breaks the game on PS4 – crashes with error CE-34878-0 being investigated

An update released today, 7th April, for Marvel’s Avengers has seemingly introduced a critical issue for the game on PlayStation 4, crashing the game with error CE-34878-0. Crystal Dynamics are currently investigating the issue and will hopefully be able to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

Patches are meant to make things better, but every once in a while, you get a very rotten egg. Update 1.5.1a (version 1.30 on PlayStation 4) was released a few hours ago across all platforms, but it’s seemingly only the PlayStation 4 version of the game that is being affected by this error.

Users are reporting that the game launches successfully, but once you try to load a save game or enter a mission the game crashes. It’s not a universal issue, but a significant number of reports are coming in and it is being investigated.

The issue is also affecting those trying to play the game via backward compatibility on PlayStation 4, which has led to some speculation that this might be related to Marvel’s Avengers’ release on PlayStation Now earlier this week. Marvel’s Avengers has been added to PS Now’s game library today, but it’s only the PS4 version that is available through the game subscription service, so there’s a small subset of PS5 owners trying to play the PS4 version of the game despite the free upgrades that are now available.

The new console upgrades were meant to be an early renaissance for the game, coming with a batch of new content, Hawkeye as a new character and the promise of much more through the rest of the year – Black Panther will be added later in 2021.

Even that came with its own awkward troubles with save file transfers, and in our review for Marvel’s Avengers’ Hawkeye DLC, Jim wrote:

Overall, Operation: Future Imperfect is a small step in the right direction, but it fails to tackle the biggest issues Marvel’s Avengers faces. Those left bitter by the game’s live service hooks, uninspired loot, and reliance on grindy dungeon brawls will find nothing worth celebrating here.

Again, hopefully the issues can be resolved soon, as Crystal Dynamics and their fellow dev teams work hard to get this game back on track.

  1. I’ve been giving it a go with PS Now and have decided it’s “Not great, but sort of fun, and why can’t we have the PS5 version?”. But I didn’t have any problems last night.

Turns out I hadn’t had the update. It was still on 1.29. And now there’s an update to version 1.31, which presumably fixes (or attempts to fix) what they broke yesterday. Seems to be one of those tiny updates that somehow still takes 10 minutes to install.
