Xbox Series X|S May update adds Quick Resume menu, improves reliability & loading times

Microsoft has released the May update for Xbox consoles, making a handful of key changes to the system software. In particular, Xbox Series X|S owners will now be able to see and better manage which games are currently suspended in Quick Resume, and Microsoft has said that they’ve made the feature faster and more reliable.

Quick Resume is a feature that allows for games to be suspended in time and then reloaded to that exact point, even if you’ve played another game or fully turned off the console. However, since the Xbox Series X|S release, it’s never been clear which games are currently saved in the Quick Resume storage space.

As was in testing for the last few weeks, the May update makes some changes. Games that support Quick Resume now have a new tag that appears when bringing up the Guide quick menu, and you have a new group that shows games that can be launched from Quick Resume. This acts similar to a pinned group, in that it exists in the My Games & Apps section of the Guide, and can be added to the Home screen. Through the group, you can also remove a game from its Quick Resume state using the options button.

Alongside from this there have also been a number of smaller changes and improvements:

  • Media apps like Disney+, Apple TV, Plex and others can now send unprocessed audio to external sound systems, instead of having it run through the Xbox’s audio. Use the “Allow Passthrough” box in the Xbox audio settings allows media.
  • Xbox Game Pass app now plays trailers for games in the spotlight when you focus on their tiles. Clicking will play audio.
  • There’s a new “Motes” dynamic background – find it in Settings > General > Personalization > My background > Dynamic background

  • Individual games can be approved for multiplayer on restricted child accounts. If your kid then wants to play a game in multiplayer that has been blocked by family settings, they can request to unblock multiplayer for that game. This will send a notification to the Xbox Family Settings app on smartphone with details about the game for the parent to decide whether to approve the request.
  • The Xbox app for Android and iOS will be updated with new push notifications for friends going online, updated achievements pages to add game stats, and improve reliability.
  • The SmartGlass app on PC will be sunset, removed from the Windows Store in June and with no more updates coming.
