Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda celebrates the 35th anniversary with three classic games

Nintendo are finally doing something to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda series with Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda. It will be available on 12th November for a US Dollar price of $49.99.

This little Game & Watch style device will feature three of the series defining games in the series. You can play the original The Legend of Zelda, its sequel with side-scrolling dungeons Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and the Game Boy classic Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. As an added bonus there’s a Legend of Zelda twist on the classic Game & Watch game Vermin.

The Game & Watch will include a little digital clock and timer function, with the clock ticking away as The Legend of Zelda plays itself in the background (you can pick up and play whenever you like). The timer, meanwhile, features battles from Zelda II, with Nintendo suggesting that you set a timer and then see how many enemies you can beat before time is up.

The whole thing follows in the footsteps of Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros., which was released last year to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. franchise. I have a bit of a feeling that the conclusion from our review of the SMB Game & Watch will hold very true of the Legend of Zelda equivalent. In our review, Dom said:

You’ll likely know if this is something you, a friend, family member or partner need in their lives, and it’s certainly a glorious little thing to behold, at least at first. In the long run it’s more likely that this is going to be a smart shelf ornament – one that makes you smile every time you glimpse it – rather than a regular gaming companion.

This was not the only Legend of Zelda announcement that Nintendo had today, with the biggest news by far being a first gameplay glimpse of what Nintendo are currently calling ‘Sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’.
