Koei Tecmo have launched a new trailer for Dynasty Warriors 9, showcasing gameplay from the upcoming spin-off. We’ve also learned a ton of details about playable characters, modes, and content via Famitsu. The game is planned to release worldwide in 2021 on PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
The new Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires trailer gives us a mix of cinematic footage as well as direct gameplay, showing off some of the game features being added. Unsurprisingly, the series hack and slash combat remains untouched though Empires (known as Shin Sangoku Musou 8 Empires in Japan) will include the siege engines and wall climbing mechanics from Dynasty Warriors 9.
For those unfamiliar with the popular Warriors spin-offs, the Empires titles take take the action-heavy gameplay and combine it with a deeper layer of strategy. In past instalments, players have created kingdoms ruled by their own dream team of characters and waged war with rivals until they unify China under one banner. Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires looks to continue this tradition and will bring back the character creator features, allowing you to field custom generals.
According to Famitsu, this character creator is similar to one used in Nioh 2, offering a robust range of options for players to experiment with. Speaking of characters, all 94 officers who appeared in Dynasty Warriors 9 will all make an appearance in Empires though developer Omega Force won’t be adding a new character.
They are also abandoning the unpopular open world game design of Dynasty Warriors 9. While some fans continue to enjoy this latest entry in the series, for many die-hard (myself included) it marked a disappointing misstep. In Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires, battles will take place on castle maps. If a siege is successful, you’ll enter “Showdown” mode, forcing the enemy generals out into the open for one last battle.
The card-like strategems from Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires will be returning. These are prepared during the War Council phase, allowing you to modify battles by causing environmental disasters or placing artillery. This new game will have a new system called Military Affinity. It’s a rock, paper, scissors design that will determine how effective some units are against others.
There is no confirmed release date for Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires though it is expected to launch some time this year. In Japan, the Xbox and Nintendo versions of the game will only be available as digital versions only.
