A new trailer has been released for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, as Nacon show off the game’s progress. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is expected for release in the Fall of 2022 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

This latest trailer shows off snippets of gameplay as Gollum skulks his way around Mordor’s Dark Tower. It’s worth noting that Lord of the Rings Gollum isn’t directly influenced by the Peter Jackson films of the early 2000s even though Gollum does look and sound similar to Andy Serkis’s iconic portrayal of the character.

The game was announced in 2019 but there were precious little information at the time. Where past games based on the Lord of the Rings license have typically focused on orc-slaying action (see Shadow of Mordor) or real-time warfare (we miss you, Battle for Middle-Earth II) Daedalic are taking a different approach: a story-driven adventure which leans on Gollum’s penchant for stealth and trickery. His split personality – a side effect from bearing the One Ring – also comes into play, influencing the decisions you will make as the game unfolds.

Gollum has been everywhere in Middle Earth, and met everyone, and Daedalic are touting this as being the first time that people will have seen many of the key locations from the novels in as much detail.

The pre-alpha footage on display certainly shows the game’s visual promise, and if you’re a fan of Tolkien’s books or their accompanying movie adaptations The Lord of the Rings Gollum looks like it’s going to bring this world to you in a fresh new way, and from a point of view we’ve never seen before. Of course, they’re banking on the fact that everyone loves Gollum, even if it isn’t Serkis behind the motion capture mask.
