The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of GTA Online will have exclusive upgrades

GTA V

Rockstar have announced that when GTA Online launches on the next generation of consoles it will include exclusive upgrades which will not be available to those playing on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.  The upgrades include “all new speed improvements” which sounds like those playing on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S may get an advantage over their last gen counterparts.

The next-gen version of GTA Online is scheduled to be released this year on November 11th, almost eight years after the original version hit consoles. GTA Online will also release as a separate standalone edition and PlayStation 5 owners will be getting it for free as long as they claim it within the first three months of the game going live.

Rockstar have not announced if the upgrade path for the full GTA V package will be free or paid, simply that the new versions will bring “new features and more”.

Rockstar recently announced that they will be shutting down the online services for three of their PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games, including GTA Online. The schedule for the server shut down is as follows:

September 16th 2021

  • L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3 – Online services for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, including website stat tracking via the Rockstar Games Social Club no longer available.
  • GTA Online – PS3 and Xbox 360 Shark Cards for GTA Online are removed from sale.

December 16th 2021

  • GTA Online – Online services for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, including website stat tracking via the Rockstar Games Social Club no longer available.

In all cases, the single player side of each game will remain playable.

There is no feature available to transfer character data or progress from these platforms to a newer generation. Virtual currency and purchases are also platform-specific and cannot be refunded or transferred, and any stat tracking for PS3 and Xbox 360 via Rockstar Games Social Club will also be removed.
