The third major update for F1 2021 is out now, adding the Jeddah street circuit for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and rounding out the trio of post-launch updates for the game.

The inclusion of the Jeddah circuit to the game brings Codemasters’ latest effort another step closer to the real world Formula 1 championship that has run this year, though there are still significant differences to the eventual series of races and events that were able to be held, given various travel restrictions and changes of plans.

With enough advance knowledge of F1’s plans, Codies were able release a game with all of the traditional circuits that would have normally featured in the F1 calendar, then adding late replacements at Imola and Turkey, and the still in construction Jeddah circuit with updates. Other circuits, such as Portimao, were added with too short notice for Codemasters to adjust.

While it’s always exciting to see the sport head to new locations or return to old ones, there is certainly controversy to the decision to hold the race in Saudi Arabia, with many of the points about the country’s history of human rights abuses echoed during the recent Saudi takeover of Premier League football club Newcastle United. There’s no rumblings of discontent through the F1 paddock at the moment, but you can expect several drivers to make important political statements while attending the event – Lewis Hamilton and Sebastien Vettel both spoke out about anti-LGBTQ+ laws during the Hungarian GP this summer.

The update comes with patch notes for version 1.13:

New Content

  • Jeddah has been added to the game
  • Added option to enable or disable Pit Lane Tyre Temperature simulation so cars that box closer to the pit lane entrance are not disadvantaged by colder tyres as they exit the pit lane.
  • 2021 Red Bull has been reverted to their traditional livery with a visual update to closer match the real season
  • Added option to disable driver moves in career
  • Equal performance has been added to Grand Prix mode using F1 2021 cars

Online

  • Users kicked from a session due to the timer running out are no longer banned from the session
  • Host-spectators will now correctly see the race starts lights go out at the same time as racers

General

  • Addressed an issue where the “Advance” button could disappear from a career save
  • R&D progress history screen now looks correct with the increased number of available tracks
  • Victory VO can now correctly be previewed within the item store
  • Addressed an issue where users could go out of world in photo mode on Imola
  • Fanatec CSL DD pedals now have the correct brake and throttle thresholds
  • DRS white line has been adjusted on Imola to match the activation point
  • General stability improvements
  • Various minor fixes

F1 2021 was another strong entry in Codemasters’ long-running F1 series, out now across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One and PC. In our F1 2021 review I wrote:

“F1 2021 is one of the broadest depictions of the sport ever created, building on familiar cars and handling alongside returning multiplayer, esports, and My Team career modes, while the new Braking Point story gives you a taste of the teammate drama you loved to watch (and mock) in Netflix’s Drive to Survive.”

  1. I had a quick go on the track yesterday and found it a good addition to F1, fast and flowing and should be easier to overtake than most street circuits.

Am I right in thinking that the Losail International circuit in Qatar won’t be added to this year’s game?

    • That’s right. Codemasters knew about Saudi Arabia, Imola and Turkey early enough that they could plan for them with updates, but Qatar was only announced in September.

      • They’ll have plenty time to get the track done as it won’t be in next years game due to that little kick about tournament being held there.
