Having recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, Bethesda launched The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Anniversary Edition. There’s also a Skyrim PS5 upgrade available for free – all you need is a copy of Skyrim Special Edition on PS4, either on disc or digital.
It only takes a few button presses, as outlined in the steps below. Bethesda is also giving Skyrim Special Edition owners some free Creation Club DLC to expand the open-world RPG even further.
Anyway, here’s how to find the Skyrim PS5 upgrade.
Upgrade Skyrim on disc
- Sign into your PSN account on PS5
- Insert the PS4 disc of Skyrim: Special Edition
- Open the Skyrim: Special Edition game hub and find the upgrade offer
- Select Download
- You can now download the PS5 version of the game, but will need the PS4 disc inserted in order to play
Upgrade the digital version of Skyrim
- Sign into your PSN account on PS5
- Find Skyrim: Special Edition in the PlayStation Store or find the game hub in your game library
- Open the Skyrim: Special Edition game hub and find the upgrade offer
- Select Download or Add to Library
- You can now download the PS5 version of the game and play
The download on PlayStation 5 is 38GB in size.
Here’s what we thought of Skyrim: Special Edition when it launched back in 2016:
The practice of re-releasing games with better visuals and a broadened set of features was originally reserved for best sellers and cult classics though nowadays just about any game can qualify. Where some of these upgrades can feel like a cheap cash grab by publishers, Skyrim is one of the few games that was genuinely screaming out for a remaster. Without the technical improvements and mod support, minor as it is on PS4, I never would have gone back to the original Skyrim, but it’s now firmly stuck in my playlist and probably wont budge for the next few months.

What’s the difference between the Special and Anniversary versions of Skyrim? Skyrim Special Edition launched 5 years ago, including the base game as well as the Heartfire, Dawnguard, and Dragonborn DLC expansions. Bethesda is now giving away four major content packs including: Saints & Seducers, Rare Curios, Survival Mode, and Fishing. Together, these add plenty of new items and features to the core game. For more details on what these pack bring to the Skyrim experience, here’s a pretty handy blog.
