Sonic Frontiers has been revealed during The Game Awards, with Sonic racing through to huge open landscapes of Starfall Islands. Coming out in late 2022, Sonic Frontiers is in development for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Here’s the blurb from the trailer to get across what Sonic Team’s shooting for:

Sonic Team presents…Sonic Frontiers, arriving Holiday 2022! An experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high velocity, open-zone freedom. Battle powerful enemies as you speed through the Starfall Islands – landscapes brimming with dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts and more!

It certainly looks like a huge, even more open 3D world for Sonic to explore.

Sonic Frontiers was teased earlier this year during May’s Sonic Connect stream for the 30th anniversary of the franchise. There was practically nothing to go on at the time, outside of seeing everyone’s favourite blue blur dashing through a forest, triggering some kind of digital effect and the looping off into the distance. There was also a rather mysterious symbol.

The game has been in development since the release of Sonic Forces in 2017, with Sonic Team and series producer Takashi Iizuka keen to kickstart a new era for the long-running series.

This isn’t the only Sonic news from the night, with a new trailer for the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 movie also released. Having been teased at the end of the first film, we get to see Tails in the… CGI? Colleen O’Shaughnessey will lend her voice to the iconic Sega character, having voiced Tails in numerous games since Sonic Boom, so its a fan-pleasing decision. The film will also feature Idris Elba as Knuckles, and we have Ben Schwartz and Jim Carey returning as Sonic  and Dr. Robotnik respectively.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie will be coming to cinemas on 8th April 2022.
