Nine Sols is the next game in development at Red Candle Games, the developer behind Detention and Devotion. The new game seems to be a bit of a departure from what the studio has worked on before with Nine Sols being described as a 2D action platformer. According to Red Candle Games, Nine Sols has combat inspired by FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and it will be an Asian fantasy. The story is about taking down the 9 Sols that rule the realm which is itself is the home to an ancient alien race.

If the name Red Candle Games, or indeed the name Devotion, is familiar then this is why. Back in 2019 the publisher Indievent lost its business license in China, after a poster in the Devotion game compared China’s President Xi Jinping to Winnie The Pooh. Following the loss, Taiwanese developer Red Candle Games issued an apology and made the decision to remove Devotion from sale. Then exactly a year ago it was announced that Devotion would be released on GOG, but at the final moment CD Projekt stopped the game from being listing following messages from “gamers.” Many did not believe this and felt there was more to it, like pressure from China. In the end, Red Candle opened its own digital storefront, which allowed players to finally purchase Devotion from March this year. It has been quite the saga. A release date and platforms for Nine Sols is yet to be confirmed with the game still being in quite early development.
