The DioField Chronicle is a new Square Enix tactical RPG for PS5 and PS4

The DioField Chronicle was announced by Square Enix during tonight’s State of Play stream, a new tactical RPG that features some gorgeous visuals and will be heading the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 later this year.

We’ve no doubt that people will immediately want to make allusions to Final Fantasy Tactics, but is that what this game will be like? Probably not. The blurb for the game’s announcement trailer describes a “Real-Time Tactical Battle” system, or RTTB. Whatever that means…

The game tells the epic story, the world ravaged by war between the Trovelt-Schoevian Empire and the Rowetale Empire, while the Kingdom of Alletain sits off to one side… until they’re dragged into the fight.

It was quite a busy showing from Square Enix, who also dropped a new Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins trailer and game demo, a new trailer for Forspoken, and announced a new action RPG called Valkyrie Elysium. There’s a lot of Square Enix games coming out in the foreseeable future!

If you want your Final Fantasy Tactics fix, though, you’ll probably want to look toward the Nintendo Switch and Triangle Strategy instead. That’s Square Enix’s most recent entry in the genre, and we loved it when it launched last week. In our Triangle Strategy review Dom said:

“Triangle Strategy is a beautiful and authentic tactical RPG. Fans of Fire Emblem in particular will love the involving narrative on top of the strategic action – just be prepared for a slow start as it sets its expansive story in motion.”
