Call of Duty Warzone Mobile announced by Activision

Activision has officially announced Call of Duty Warzone Mobile, promising to adapt the battle royale giant for gaming on-the-go.

This news comes as Warzone celebrates its second anniversary. The free to play online shooter launched on March 10, 2020, proceeding to take the world by storm.

There is no trailer or gameplay footage to show off Warzone mobile. Instead Activision made the announcement via the Call of Duty blog, looking to recruit developers to one of the studios working on the title. These include Solid State Studios, Beenox, Digital Legends, and Demonware.

This reveal should come as no surprise for those who have been watching the steady rise of battle royale shooters on mobile, not to mention Activision’s own Call of Duty Mobile. Condensing the series’ snappy gunplay and game modes for smartphones has proved a massive success for the publisher. The latest figures estimate a daily player count of around 6.5 million, with COD Mobile responsible for over $1 billion in 2021 revenue.

Exactly how Warzone Mobile will coexist or integrate with the game is unknown. Call of Duty Mobile already has its own battle royale mode that can host up to 100 players per match. We assume Warzone will bolster that number considerably, while also adopting more advanced systems and features console players are familiar with.

The newest game in the series, Call of Duty Vanguard, launched last year with a cinematic campaign, a cleverly reworked Zombies mode, and punchy competitive multiplayer. In our Vanguard review we scored the game a 9/10:

The stars have aligned for Call of Duty: Vanguard. For the first time, this truly feels like a full package without any caveats. Sure, some parts are naturally stronger than others but there isn’t a weak link in sight. After back to back triumphs, Call of Duty is now on a killstreak.

Looking ahead, there’s a very high probability the next Call of Duty will be Modern Warfare 2 with Infinity Ward back at the helm.
