People trying to redeem pre-paid PlayStation Plus subscription codes have been finding themselves unable to do so, as Sony is seemingly blocking attempts by gamers to get cheap upgrades to PlayStation Plus Premium when the subscription service is relaunched in June.
While there’s been no official comment on the issue, people are receiving errors that plainly state “The pre-paid card could not be redeemed. Please try again later.” specifically when trying to redeem valid PlayStation Plus codes. It comes shortly after Sony explained how they would honour the subscriptions of those that hold both PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus subs through the transition.
Users have been getting in touch with PlayStation support channels, receiving confirmation that the ability to redeem valid codes is being deliberately blocked.
Thos with both PS Plus and PS Now subs will be upgraded to PS Plus Premium for the duration of whichever is longer. With the long-running ability to stack subscriptions up to 10 years, frugal and deal savvy gamers have almost certainly been trying to get PS Plus Premium on the cheap, gaining access to a wide library of games in the subscription service, that includes a back catalogue of streamed PS3 games and access to PS1, PS2 and PSP titles as well.
The decision to block code stacking flies in the opposite direction to Microsoft’s policies regarding Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Ever since the launch of Ultimate, users have been able to stack Xbox Live Gold subscriptions and then upgrade by purchasing a single month of Ultimate, converting up to three years of Live Gold into Game Pass Ultimate. To the best of my knowledge, this process still works after roughly three years!
All-New PlayStation Plus vs. Xbox Game Pass – which is better value?
Then again, you can’t blame Sony for trying to protect their profit margins as they consolidate their services. The relaunch of PlayStation Plus will take place through June, folding PS Now into the PS Plus brand with three tiers available to subscribers. These range from offering exactly what PlayStation Plus does now in the Essential plan, through a library of downloadable PS4 and PS5 games with PS Plus Extra, and finally adding in game streaming with PS3 games, and a new selection of PS1, PS2 and PSP games in PS Plus Premium.
