Homeworld 3 has been delayed to 2023

Homeworld 3 will now not be released until 2023, Blackbird Interactive has announced. The aim is to have the game out in the first half of 2023, with development taking more time so it is done in a sustainable way for the development team. Back in December, Blackbird Interactive was aiming for a Q4 2022 release for Homeworld 3.

In a statement, the developers wrote, “We are moving the launch of Homeworld 3 into the first half of 2023. Delivering Homeworld 3 at the highest quality is the top priority for Gearbox Publishing and Blackbird Interactive because we recognise the special place the series holds in the hearts of players. This passion from players fuels the work and the additional time will allow us to make good on our commitment to quality in a healthy and sustainable way for all those involved. Blackbird Interactive is building the Homeworld game players have dreamed of, and we are excited to share the deepest look yet at Homeworld 3 during gamescom later this summer. We thank you all for your continued support.”

Blackbird Interactive’s first game eventually morphed into a sequel to the 3D space RTS, the planet-bound Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, but Homeworld 3 is going interstellar once more, allowing for the kinds of fully 3D combat and strategy that defined the original games. There’s a reason why Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are still held up as some of the best RTS games out there. Homeworld 3 was originally funded via a fundraising campaign through Fig, but this was cancelled after Gearbox was acquired by Embracer Group. This meant those who had funded got their money back, aside from those whose investment essentially became a pre-order for Homeworld 3. We will see later this year how progress has gone on the game with the deeper look that has been teased in the statement above.
