A few short weeks after they were announced for Xbox, PlayStation and PC, Atlus has now confirmed that the mainline Persona series is coming to Nintendo Switch! Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal will all jump to Nintendo’s handheld, starting with P5R on 21st October.
Honestly, it’s been a rather clumsy announcement from Atlus. The Persona series was confirmed for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC during the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase at not-E3. A hot minute later, they then shared that the games would also all be coming to PS5, but it was only later clarified that they would also be coming to PS4 as well. It’s all a bit muddled thanks to some of the games already being out on some of these platforms.
Thankfully the Switch port news is as simple as can be: Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal are coming to Switch.
Here’s the full breakdown:
- Persona 3 Portable – Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC – 2023
- Persona 4 Golden – Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch – 2023
- Persona 5 Royal – PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC – 21st October
Persona has long been synonymous with PlayStation, so it makes sense that the PS5 will also be getting the ports of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden – Persona 5 Royal is already playable on PS5 via backward compatibility and was included with the PS Plus Collection until its removal earlier this year.
It’s also sensible to bring more of the series to PC. Persona 4 Golden already released for Windows PC in 2020, so getting P3P and P5R will greatly expand the mainline games available via Steam, especially as Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and Persona 5 Strikers are also already available. What will be most interesting is if the mainline games coming to Xbox will be followed by some of the many spin-offs to this spin-off series.
Persona 3 Portable was originally released for PSP, a shrunk down version of the PS2 original JRPG that added new features like female playable characters and more battle controls, though sacrificed the added content that was featured in Persona 3 FES – for some, it’s P3FES that is the definitive version of the game. Persona 4 Golden was another enhanced PS2 game, though this time only released for PS Vita in the West. Getting that on home consoles will be great.
Persona 5 is the game that saw the series hit the big time. This game came out in Japan for PS3 and PS4 in 2016 before a localised  PS4 release arrived in the west a year later, where it was met with overwhelming critical praise and became a huge commercial success. Once again, Atlus went back and expanded on the game with Persona 5 Royal, adding new narrative elements to the title.
All games have a common theme of following school children as they navigate both everyday life and continually delve into the supernatural, using Personas to battle against demons and restore order to the world. In Persona 5, the student protagonists are disguising themselves as thieves to tackle the city of Tokyo’s corruption and escape societal pressures.
Persona 5 Royal, much like the original release, is absolutely fantastic. In our 10/10 Â Persona 5 Royal review, Nic said
