Black Isle Studios has announced that the remastered Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 will be out next week on 20th July for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Following in the footsteps of the remastered original which came out last year, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II has been revitalised for modern consoles. Originally released for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, the game now supports up to 4K native resolutions (depending on the system). They’ve verified that it works fine on Steam Deck as well, which you’d hope it would considering it’s an 18 year old game and is also coming to Switch!

A hack and slash action RPG, you can choose from five playable characters and classes – barbarian, monk, necromancer, rogue or cleric – and battle through 80 levels set in and around the city of Baldur’s Gate, fighting with Hobgoblins, Ghouls, Golems and even Dragons.

The game comes with four difficulty levels – Easy, Normal, Hard and Extreme – and while you can play solo, you’ll probably want to grab a buddy to play through the game with. Alas, there’s no online co-op support, but there is full local co-op support, just like the original.

All of this might sound quite familiar to anyone that was interested in picking up the first remaster. In our review of Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, Reuben concluded:

“A formerly excellent game brought down significantly by a poor remaster with barely any upgrades to sell it to a new audience, at a price that’s a little too high for what the game is. Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance still has a great, classic DnD story and setting, with an excellent musical score, but the experience is marred by technical issues that range from disappearing sound effects and frame rate drops to frequent crashes.”

Between that and the disappointment of Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance successor which also came out last year, fans of this series will simply have to hope that greater efforts have been put in to polish and refine the sequel remaster.
