Rayman is coming to Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope in DLC next year

Right at the end of their Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope segment in Ubisoft Forward, game director Davide Soliani gave us a little teaser about what awaits the game after release. Three DLC expansions are planned for the game over the coming year, and the third expansion will feature a surprise new playable hero character… Rayman!

While a smidgeon surprising, it actually makes an awful lot of sense that Rayman would show up within the Mario + Rabbids mashup, since the Rabbids originated as a spin-off from the Rayman series.

Rayman will be joining an expanded cast of characters from the Mario series and their Rabbids counterparts. New for this game is Rosalina and Rabbid Rosalina who is a sleepy, grumpy opposite land version of the character. The game will see you jumping from planet to planet, hoping to rescue Sparks from the evil Cursa. Even Bowser is teaming up with you to stop Cursa (though his motivations aren’t exactly altruistic).

The Ubisoft Forward showcase also gave us a deeper look at the gameplay and the planet of Terra Flora, such as how you’ll explore the world, chat to fun NPCs, solve environments puzzles and more. The point of this area is to get up to the top of a volcano, and you need to catch the Wiggler train to get there, building up to a boss battle – check out the gameplay trailer here.

Looking back on our review of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Dave said:

“As strange as Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle sounds on paper, there are some really good ideas in the mix. Having XCOM’s battle gameplay presented in a more light lighthearted fashion and greatly enhancing character movement are both excellent touches. It’s not perfect, but there’s a lot to like from this unlikely combination.”
