EA Sports PGA Tour teaser trailer shows off some golf

EA has released an official teaser trailer for EA Sports PGA Tour, the upcoming revival of the EA golfing series that’s set for release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in Spring 2023.

This is the first real look at what EA Sports PGA Tour will offer, and while it’s not gameplay, it certainly shows the pristine direction that they’re taking. Aiming to be the go-to game for golf fans, EA has secured the rights to feature all four Majors in their game, which could be a major boon to the new game’s appeal.

The game will also feature the full FedExCup Playoffs and courses, as well as THE PLAYERS Championship. Jordan Spieth will be one of the main pro golfers, and the LPGA will also feature with major tournaments like The Amundi Evian Championship and leading female players like Lexi Thompson and Jin-Young Ko.

With the current gen Frostbite engine powering things, they will aim to push the graphical boundaries for golf games, but also incorporate modern authentic touches to the presentation, like ShotLink for the real-time scoring system and TrackMan for 3D ball flight and swing analysis.

These days EA is not the only golf game in town. Where they long had the predominant golf title with the Tiger Woods franchise between 1998 and 2013, they’ve not released a golf game since Rory McIlroy PGA Tour in 2015. That game was their one and only entry on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, leaving a vacuum of golf games that went unfilled by a licensed game until HB Studios’ The Golf Club series picked up the PGA Tour license in 2018. That morphed into the PGA Tour 2K series with the 2020 game, but sporting rights are a tricky field to navigate, and 2K’s non-exclusive license left the door open for EA to announce the return of EA Sports PGA Tour in March of last year.

Originally planned for release in Spring 2022, EA Tiburon missed that target, and they clearly decided that it would be best to delay the game for a whole year, to really hit the prime golfing season through the northern hemisphere’s summer and with all the licensed majors running their course.

Of course, the teaser trailer has also been quite cheekily timed to release just before the launch of PGA Tour 2K23 later this week. Hoping to steal some of the limelight away from your rivals, were you EA? Well… mission’s probably been accomplished.
