Microsoft has released the October 2022 update for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, adding new HDMI-CEC capabilities and answering the long-standing fan request to be able to mute the booming Xbox Series X|S startup logo.

Xbox October 2022 Update

Here’s everything that’s new with the Xbox October 2022 update:

  • From the dashboard, there’s a new search bar at the top of the screen, so you can search for games, apps and media more quickly – though the search on Xbox is notoriously bad, so I don’t know how helpful that is.
  • Xbox Series X|S consoles have always been able to use HDMI-CEC to send commands to TVs when the feature is enabled, though this has been limited to power settings to date. The October 2022 update adds the ability adjust TV volume through an Xbox Series console – great for if the TV remote is out of reach. Press the Xbox button to bring up the Guide, go to Audio & Music, and you’ll see TV options at the bottom to mute and adjust volume.
  • Speaking of muting, you can now silence the startup sequence on Xbox consoles. This can be found in the Xbox Settings. Bring up the Guide with the Xbox button, then go to  Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output > Additional options and select Mute startup sounds. This is also where you can adjust the console’s power button chime.
  • There’s new menu screens to explain how to select or change your designated home Xbox, and what this means for access and content sharing.
  • Xbox power modes have been renamed. ‘Standby’ is now called ‘Sleep’, while ‘Energy Saver’ is now called ‘Shutdown (energy saving)’. The modes themselves have not changed, and we’d absolutely recommend saving energy on Xbox Series, thanks to the ultra-fast boot times and Quick Resume.
  • There’s a similar rebranding job from ‘Xbox passkey’ and ‘Xbox guest key’ to ‘Xbox PIN’ and ‘Xbox guest PIN’. This works exactly the same as before.
  • THere’s a new firmware update for Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, Xbox Series X|S Wireless Controllers, Xbox Adaptive Controllers and Xbox One Wireless Controllers with Bluetooth support. You can update wirelessly or over USB.
  • Share button clips on your Xbox can now be trimmed using the Xbox app for Android and iOS.
