Eggnut and Raw Fury have announced Tails: The Backbone Preludes, a prequel story to the Post-Noir adventure Backbone that released back in 2021. Tails: The Backbone Preludes will be coming to PC via Steam on 2nd February 2023.
Set in a Vancouver that’s filled with walking, talking furry animals instead of humans, the prequel will feature four intertwined stories that follows Howard Lotor, Clarissa Bloodworth, Renee Wilson and Eli Abbas. Players will get to see them go through formative moments of their lives, and choices will be noted through the story, all of which is rendered in a quite gorgeous pixel art aesthetic that returns from Backbone.
While the original game sported a very strong visual direction, we felt that it came up short in other areas. In our Backbone review, Aran said, “It opens with a strong prologue, but the story that follows tries to hit too many different themes meaning there’s a lack of focus by the time it comes to a conclusion.”
Here’s hoping the the prequel can more fully explore the narrative avenues it ventures down with its more succinct character vignettes and a direction leading to the previously released game.
