Xbox exclusive multiplayer shooter CrossfireX is being shut down, Smilegate and Remedy have announced, with access to both the multiplayer and single player campaign modes being removed on 18th May 2023.

Sales for the game have been halted on the Xbox Store, with any purchases made in the last 14 days eligible for a refund.

“It is with the deepest regret that we are informing you of our decision to end support for CrossfireX on May 18, 2023,” Smilegate said in a statement on its website. “Since the launch of the game, we have worked tirelessly to bring it to a point where we can all be proud, and throughout it all we have had the honour and pleasure of supporting our players.”

The free-to-play shooter CrossfireX launched almost exactly one year ago on 10th February, a console adaptation of the popular Korean Counter Strike-alike Crossfire alongside two premium single player campaigns developed by Remedy Entertainment – one of which was made available within Xbox Game Pass. However, it was lambasted at launch with connection issues, controller sensitivity and poor balance. These elements were improved over time, but the poor launch seemingly did more damage than could be recovered from.

This is the latest in a growing list of game shutdowns and internal cancellations that have been announced in the past few days and weeks. Ubisoft cancelled several nascent projects, EA has shut down Apex Legends Mobile and canned Battlefield Mobile and reportedly a new Titanfall game, Epic and Iron Galaxy’s Rumbleverse is closing, and so is Knockout City. Alongside major layoffs across the tech industry, it feels like a lot of companies are hitting the reset button.
