Cities: Skylines Remastered is a free upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S out next week

Paradox Interactive and Colossal Order have announced Cities: Skylines Remastered, an enhanced version of the console edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, that will be coming out next week on 15th February. Oh, and there will be free upgrades for owners of the game on PS4 and Xbox One!

Cities: Skylines Remastered will really take advantage of the power of the new generation consoles, both through general graphics performance increases, and by opening things up for much larger cities than before. Instead of having 9 tiles for cities to build on in a 3×3 grid, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players will be able to build across 25 tiles of landscape in a 5×5 grid. That’s a huge increase and will allow for some sprawling metropolises, going hand in hand with a new map editor.

Beyond that, Remastered will also feature a new quick selection tool, user experience improvements such as precision placement, distance indicator and updated snapping options, and there will be new environmental control options so you can adjust the time of day, rain and fog, and environment colours.

Of course, Cities: Skylines is now a very matured game and experience, having originally release on PC in 2015, and then being ported to Xbox and PlayStation for the first time in 2017. There’s been plenty of paid DLC expansions in that time, and one burning question will be what happens to those. The good news is that the After Dark expansion is included for free with Cities: Skylines Remastered, just as it was with the original console release, and that all of the expansions will also be freely upgraded, all the way up to the recent Airports.

For new players, the base game will be priced at $39.99 USD / £34.99 / €39.99 – the same as the existing console editions. It’s essentially a drop-in replacement, as it will give access as a cross-generation bundle for PS5 & PS4, and for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

  1. Sweet! Cities is all my son & I have been playing for the last few months and I’ve already spent a fair whack on DLC, so glad to see this is all free. 25 tiles is a massive and much needed update.
