C-Smash VRS revives a Dreamcast classic for PSVR 2 this year, with a demo in March

C-Smash VRS

After a teaser a few weeks ago, C-Smash VRS has been announced by RapidEyeMovers and Wolf & Wood, reimagining Sega’s Dreamcast and arcade game Cosmic Smash for PlayStation VR 2 and modern online multiplayer.

The game will be released in 2023, but a demo is coming out on 23rd March.

Cosmic Smash is far from a mainstream brand from Sega, as a game that originally released in arcades in 2001. It was brought to Dreamcast, but only in Japan and then only shortly before Sega exited the home console market.

C-Smash VRS takes the abstract squash courts of the original Cosmic Smash and adapting the game into a motion-controlled VR title, you’ll take your racquet and smash a ball back and forth in timed block-breaking challenges where you dash and duck, performing trick smashes and using the walls to bounce shots back and forth.

It sounds like it will be a rather energetic game, and will feature single player, online co-op and online competitive play.

C-Smash VRS will make use of PSVR 2 with motion controls from the Sense controllers, finger detection, 3D audio and haptics.

With a dynamic soundtrack from DJ Ken Ishii (Rez Infinite) and Danalogue (front man of The Comet is Coming and Soccer 96), and tapping into those haptics in both controllers and headset, there’s sure to be some of the synesthesia effect that was noted in Rez Infinite and Tetris Effect.

PlayStation VR 2 is out in just over a week on 22nd February with an exciting and broad launch line up that includes both brand new games, upgrades from PSVR and ports from other platforms. We’ve got a review headset in hand – as evidenced by our unboxing – and will soon be able to talk al about our experiences with the next generation VR headset.
