Sony has posted a pair of teardown videos ahead of the launch of PlayStation VR 2 on 22nd February, giving us a look at all of the tech inside and explaining the various features of the headset and the new Sense controllers.
In the PSVR 2 teardown, Takamasa Araki from the Mechanical Design team opens up the headset, exploring all of the tweaks to VR headset design that Sony has made and the high-end features they’ve built into it. The high resolution 2000×2040 pixel displays for each eye are only the beginning, as there’s also internal eye-tracking, physically movable lenses to help get the perfect focus for players, and a new design of light shroud with cooling vents to keep your face cool.
The headband aims to be as light as possible with the halo design, with a single USB-C cable running through it to the headset, while also featuring attachment points for the included earbuds. There’s also the four forward-facing cameras to allow for tracking of the environment and peripherals.
On to the second video with Takeshi Igarashi from the Peripheral Design team, and we have a teardown of the PSVR 2 Sense controller. He explains its design inspiration as a hollowed sphere, with the white plastic cover thin and light enough to allow the ring of 14 IR LEDs to shine through for tracking.
Breaking open the hand grip reveals finger detection sensors in the grip, the L1/R1 grip button, on the adaptive trigger and analogue stick, allowing for accurate finger sensing and gestures. The haptic feedback motor has been specially designed for the Sense controller, coming in at around half the size of the motors in the DualSense, and there’s a small battery squeezed in there as well.
It’s always fascinating to see tech taken apart, and Sony’s console hardware designs have been particularly interesting in recent years as they add new features intended to enhance gaming.
