Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – How to use amiibo and what they unlock

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom hand art header

Tears of the Kingdom amiibo support can be a real lifeline when playing this latest The Legend of Zelda adventure, dropping in a mixture of basic supplies, chests, netting you the legendary horse Epona, and new paraglider customisation. Here’s how it all works.

How to use amiibo with Tears of the Kingdom

Amiibo in Tears of the Kingdom work almost identically to how it was in Breath of the Wild, and with almost identical rewards. The way that you enter into amiibo mode has been very slightly changed, though, as Nintendo have slightly adjusted the control scheme.

Tears of the Kingdom amiibo guide

  • Hold the ‘L’ button to bring up the ability selector wheel and choose the amiibo icon in the bottom left.
  • Target an empty patch of ground without anything above you.
  • Hold the amiibo to the NFC reader – either the right Joy-Con analogue stick or the Switch logo on a switch Pro controller.
  • Collect the goodies that drop into the world!

Legend of Zelda amiibo can be used once per day to dish out a specific set of supplies, a chest, or some other special rewards. Non-Zelda amiibo can also be used for a drop of basic crafting items.

Most Zelda amiibo have the chance to drop fabrics that can be taken to the dye Shop in Hateno Village, customising the look of Link’s paraglider, as well as some classic tunics to wear from previous games.
