Ubisoft has revealed Assassin’s Creed Nexus, the company’s first attempt to bring their biggest franchise to virtual reality. AC Nexus is in development for Meta Quest 2 and newer by the end of this year.
AC Nexus brings back three of the most popular characters and settings from the long-running series. You’ll jump between Ezio, Connor and Kassandra, the protagonists of Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed 3 and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Each character will have a new original story to delve into, with Kassandra wrapped up in the action surrounding the Thirty Tyrants, while Connor is embroiled in a story of espionage, intrigue and lies.
The glue that holds it all together is the modern setting, set in Abstergo Industries where they’re trying to find a way to use memories to influence people and the world. Basically, they’re wanting to fix elections, but haven’t figured out they can use Facebook ad targeting instead of using ancient technologies. Still, you have to infiltrate Abstergo, find what they’re looking for first and stop their latest schemes.
While this will be the first VR Assassin’s Creed, Ubisoft are not holding back on what you can do. The environments are open maps that can be climbs and parkoured through, giving you a non-linear approach to climb, sneak or fight. There will also be a variety of weapons and tools, including the wrist blades, real fighting actions, throwing blades, crossbows and more.
The game will have a LOT of comfort options, which is good when there’s leaping aerial takedowns and looking down in VR is usually a big no-no. Teleport locomotion and vignetting are options, and there are systems to help with fear of heights using in-game grids and other visual effects.
AC Nexus is a big project for Ubisoft, and a big game for virtual reality in general. Hopefully they’ve got a great suite of comfort options to allow a wide group of people enjoy it. We also hope it’s only a briefly timed exclusive, so we can play it on PSVR2!
