Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may be bigger and better than Insomniac’s original game, but is it longer? We clocked the total amount of time spent in-game after watching the credits roll – here’s how long it took us to beat the hotly-anticipated superhero sequel.
13 hours. To be clear, in our playthrough we focused mainly on completing story missions, but also spent an hour or two clearing side activities from the map, in Photo Mode, and generally exploring. Another writer working on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 review had a playtime of around 20 hours.
Of course, every player’s mileage will vary depending on skill level and their penchant for exploration, potentially sinking untold hours as you stray from the beaten path. Meanwhile, virtual photographers will happily watch the time slip away in pursuit of the perfect shot.
Now, 13 hours may sound short to some. There seems to be an expectation for AAA games – especially those boasting huge open worlds – to keep players on the hook for dozens of hours. After all, when you’ve spent upwards of £70 on a new game, you don’t want to breeze throughout it after a handful of sessions. It needs to last long enough to leave an impact.
With that said, few games manage to strike a good balance of thrilling set piece action and bland filler. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is superbly paced and never outstays its welcome with side activities being short yet still rewarding. Those completionists who remember playing through the original game will remember some of its chore-like open world content which ended up needlessly adding bloat.
The sequel sits somewhere between Marvel’s Spider-Man, which takes 17 hours to beat according to HLTB, and Miles Morales which takes 7 and a half hours. Of course, these numbers don’t take into account the heaps of side content available as well as the time you’ll spend simply exploring and seeing what else New York City has to offer.
