Is Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 happening?

Is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 getting a sequel? With the original game being an all-time bestseller for publisher Sony it was clear that the superhero sim wouldn’t be a one-off. Not only that, the game’s story strongly hinted that there was more to come and, sure enough, we now had a semi sequel in the form of Spider-Man: Miles Morales now followed up by Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PS5. But where will the series go next? Needless to say, the following post touches on some pretty big story spoilers – you’ve been warned!

Despite introducing a global level threat and severely upping the stakes, there’s at least one more story to tell in Insomniac’s Spidey universe. With Peter, Miles, and Mary Jane having thwarted Venom and the Symbiote invasion, our heroes are given a moment of respite before players start guessing at what unknown enemy they’ll encounter next.

In a similar fashion to the first game, we’re given some pretty juicy clues following the end credits. Once again, we see Norman Osborn desperately devising a cure for his son, Harry. In the aftermath of Venom’s rampage, he asks for his scientists to retrieve something he calls the “G-Serum”. It’s very unlikely the “G” stands for Goblin, though it’s heavily implied that we’ll finally get to meet Spidey’s arch nemesis in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.

If that wasn’t enough, Norman is now hellbent on unmasking the Spider-Men. Why? Although they repelled the Symbiotes, Harry is left in a coma he’s unlikely to awaken from. And who better to help him in his vendetta than former rival, Dr. Otto Octavius? Paying him visit in The Raft, Doc Ock alludes to their unlikely pairing being the final chapter in the Spider-Man trilogy.

Through Miles, we also witness another narrative thread start to unspool. Throughout the game, his mother refers to someone she has been dating though his identity remains a mystery right up until the end. His identity really won’t mean much to those who aren’t tangled within the wider web of Spider-Man lore. However, when Albert Moon enters the scene he also introduces his daughter, Cindy, who webheads will immediately recognise as Silk.

Her role in Spider-Man 3 is a complete mystery for now though we could see her join Peter and Miles as a potential third playable character. At the end of the second game, Peter tells Miles that he wants to hang up the webbed mask for a while and live a normal life. Sounds like a perfect opportunity for a Miles and Silk adventure. Perhaps Insomniac are planning a Spider-Man 2.5 in a similar vein to 2020’s Miles Morales?

Although some storylines in Spider-Man 2 will prove divisive, it’s refreshing to see Insomniac take a gamble, altering well-known Spidey staples and giving lesser known characters some time in the spotlight. When the next game comes around, we’re hoping to see some new and unfamiliar faces join Spider-Man’s rogue’s gallery.

It could be a good few years before we get a glimpse at this final chapter but it’s not all bad news for Marvel fans with Insomniac’s Wolverine game likely due to re-emerge in the coming months.
