PS5 exclusive Rise of the Ronin took a big spot in today’s State of Play stream, with a new trailer showcasing Team Ninja’s upcoming open world adventure. Rise of the Ronin is coming to PlayStation 5 on 22nd March 2024.
The new trailer shows horse riding and gliding using a device called “Avicula”, and details the combat. You can parry , hack and slash to break stances, standard fare, but also use a grappling hook to snatch enemies from afar. Weapons from foreign lands such as guns and flamethrowers are available, using the right weapon against the right enemy could give you a advantage.
Rise of the Ronin casts you as one of these legendary wandering samurai who has to step up and shape the future of Japan at the end of the 19th century. You’ll play in a wide open world of late-Edo period Japan amidst the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate, forging your own path and choosing which faction to ally yourself with. You’ll be exploring on horse and glider, engaging in battle with swords, spears, firearms and thrown weapons.
Announced back at 2022, Rise of the Ronin has been in development for around eight years, looking to make the most of the current rush for Japanese Japanese historical adventures. The closest counterpart in terms of the historical setting will be the newly announced Like a Dragon: Ishin remake, while there’s the mythology-infused battling of Nioh by Team Ninja as well, but for a grand open-world adventure, you’d look to the US-made PlayStation exclusive hit Ghost of Tsushima. That game was set some 600 years before Rise of the Ronin, with a distinct period of Japanese history that could easily whet people’s appetites to explore more and different settings.
