Freedom Wars will no longer be a PS Vita exclusive, with Bandai Namco announcing that it is releasing Freedom Wars Remastered for PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC via Steam. Freedom Wars was originally released for the PS Vita in 2014. The remastered version brings with it support for 4K visuals and 60fps, adjusted difficulty options, gameplay balances, and new updates to weapon crafting and upgrading.
Freedom Wars is set in the fictional world of Panopticon where your character has been sentenced to a one million year prison sentence, and the only way to reduce that sentence is to serve the state. That is done through fighting the enemies of Panopticon out in the wasteland, where the action is mixed between attacking with melee and range weapons, as well as using the Thorn grappling hook to get in close. When not in battle, players return to prison where they have to follow the rules or be pulled up on infractions. Behave and you are given additional liberties to help cope with your prison sentence. You will also meet a range of characters, and it is from this pool you can select who will venture into battle with you.
Freedom Wars Review
In our review for the original Freedom Wars release, Jim said, “Freedom Wars is far from being the Vita flagship fans were hoping for. Though it makes a sound first impression it’s ultimately held back by a forced narrative and gameplay segments that fall by the wayside. Thanks to its unique tone and approach to gameplay, Freedom Wars manages to distance itself from Monster Hunter, yet it’s difficult not to compare the two. After all, Capcom’s power-selling franchise didn’t just popularise the genre, it single-handedly created it. Though Freedom Wars’ appeal is limited, there will doubtlessly be many who find themselves hooked. For them, the game has a lot to offer, even beyond the limitless hours of content thanks to a suite of online features. Those who aren’t willing to put in the time, however, may find themselves short-changed.”
Freedom Wars Remastered will be released on January 10th, 2025.
