Undead Labs has finally emerged with a true reveal for State of Decay 3, their open world zombie survival game sequel. It is set to release in 2027 across Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5.
The gameplay trailer showcases elements like community and base building, fighting through hordes of zombies and blowing up a big undead infection-y heart.
The threat has evolved since State of Decay 2, with zombies now said to be hunting together, as opposed to being more disorganised and passive.
Can you believe it has been six years since State of Decay 3 was announced for Xbox Series X and PC? At the time, the development team was aiming for a 2021 release which never came with radio silence for a good few years. Then in 2024, State of Decay 3 had a big re-reveal with a new story trailer, but it was another long wait before alpha playtests were announced earlier this year. Expect those to continue and potentially grow in the months ahead.
In our review for State of Decay 2, Jim wrote, “If you’re looking for a compelling and atmospheric take on the zombie genre that’s more Walking Dead than Left 4 Dead, State of Decay 2 is an imperfect but enjoyable sequel to the superior original. The gameplay loop of scavenging, crafting and killing can begin to wear thin, but the human element is capable of pulling you back in. Tackling the world with others in tow may decimate the game’s carefully constructed atmosphere, but those multiplayer shenanigans will probably be wild enough to distract from the host of technical issues that simply refuse to die.”
