Wizards of the Coast and developer Invoke Studios have released a gameplay reveal trailer for Warlock, their new third person action adventure set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons.
Warlock follows the journey of Kaatri, a weapons master who makes a pact with an otherworldly being to use their magic against a dark power that has wronged her. Kaatri is played by Tricia Helfer, who is a very familiar actor for fans of Battlestar Galactica, and will be performing opposite Maggie Robertson in the role of Tasha, the unassumingly named otherworldly being who is Kaatri’s patron.
Using this power enables Kaatri to not just fight monsters, but affect the world in different ways. The new ability to ‘see’ the magic within the world the same way that Tasha does leads Kaatri to a nearby town, where she can then follow a snippet of information from one of its residents to explore a dark corner of it. Kaatri can shadow step as a cloud of smoke to pass through a metal grate, can use black tentacles to hold a stone surface that she’s telekinetically moved around to create a new platform, perform magical leaps, and more.
In combat, those same abilities come into use in offensive ways. Those black tentacles can hold a foe in place, while a fae switch can swap places with another person, putting them in harms way of a Death Kiss (think a Beholder but not as powerful), and more.
Kaatri can also cast higher level magics in the form of rituals, conjuring a tablet and adding the necessary ingredients and actions to, for example, turn a sunny day into a sodden foggy one, obscuring her advance.
Warlock is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and scheduled to release in 2027, and off the back of this trailer, we’re very intrigued by its potential.
