Speaking to CVG whilst in Cologne, EA Labels president, Frank Gibeau, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to new IP. When prompted to talk about the publisher’s current line up, which consists mostly of sequels and franchise titles, Gibeau highlighted EA’s need to keep creating fresh experiences.
We’re always going to be building new IP and the mix that we have now is… you’re right, we do have a lot more titles now that are proven, where as a few years ago we we’re coming out with a lot of IPs because the cupboards were bare. We had been a licensed-oriented group.
Of course, EA made a big step away from that franchise-oriented approach with Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge in 2008 and Gibeau says they will be using that similar approach in the future.
I figure we’ll probably be doing one to two new IPs a year as far out as I can see – and we always have new IPs in development
Of course, Battlefield 3 is their big hitter for this holiday season but the news that the giant publisher is still committed to bringing out new titles should be encouraging to gamers everywhere.

This is great news. New IPs are vital.

Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge were fantastic.
Mirror’s Edge felt completely new, and even though Dead Space wasn’t exactly the first in it’s genre, survival horror has felt very bare this generation, and Dead Space is up there with Siren Blood Curse for the best of the genre.

Good shout with Siren Blood Curse (and Dead Space)…I was actually scared to play Siren at times, although the controls were a part of that! :)
Origami Killer
Really good to see new IPs being guaranteed basically. Hopefully they will be up to the standard of Mirrors Edge and Dead Space (on the basis of the the 2nd, havnt played first). Saying that Shadows of the Damned has EA on it and unfortunately hasn’t done so well, but good to see they are still pushing new IPs

Really great news and I have a lot of time for EA these days, they’ve really turned themselves around as a company. Looking forward to seeing just what they have up their sleeve, on a personal level I’d like to see an RPG, a genre which has all but gone stale this generation.

good to know. i want some inovation before things stagnate

Good to hear, its sad that we rarely see new IP’s this days as only the massive publishers that have guaranteed yearly cashflows (Fifa etc for EA, COD for Activision etc) can afford to take a chance with new IP’s.

With many current IPs being milked to death, new stuff will always be needed to keep the industry fresh and exciting, good move EA.
Crazy_Del
Well done on EA new IPs are great and yes it is risky business but might come out on top. Deadspace was awesome so EA will be comfortable on new IPs no problem.
The Lone Steven
A decent Lord Of The Rings RPG Please EA. :) if they can get the rights to it or a Harry Potter RPG as that is screaming for a RPG.
It is a bit risky but if they do it well, it will pay off. I hope there will be more single player new ips.:D
Origami Killer
Lord of the rings RPG is a good idea, but that isnt really a new IP is it? nor Harry Potter. You should try the Third Age on PS2, it’s turn based gameplay but I quite liked it and it felt like an RPG.

It makes sense, new IP as well as existing IP, make a strong foundation. The exciting IP is a fairly reliable source of income, and the new IP keeps things fresh. Some new IP will then go on to join the existing IP, and potentially filling a void left by retiring IP.
