Crytek: Next-gen Is Actually Not A Clear Picture Right Now

Crytek, in an interview today, have spoke out again about next-gen consoles, and how their CryEngine engine will be the one to watch out for.

“We’ve been touting CryEngine as a next-gen technology for about two years now,” said the studio. “Since 2010 CryEngine has been next-gen ready.”

“You look at today’s next-gen offerings with supposedly next-gen graphics… That’s exactly what we were talking about two years ago.” Crytek are clearly trying to downplay any rivals – namely Epic and their Unreal engine.

“People have by now caught up but we haven’t been sitting around – we’ve been pushing the boundaries as well. A lot of these features will be visible in the next iteration for the engine.”

Like Epic, it’s widely accepted that Crytek have had access to the PS4 and the new Xbox for a while.

“Obviously we can’t talk about what they are but we know what next-gen entails,” they said. “I think people… I’m not going to judge it because it’ll get me in trouble, but next-gen is actually not a clear picture right now.”

It’s an interesting comment – and one open to some speculation. Is this a sign that the machines won’t be as powerful as we’re hoping? Or something else entirely?

  1. A bit full of themselves this Crytek lot, aren’t they.

  2. Sure their engine looks nice but they’re games are hit and miss. Also, the E3 Video Demo for Unreal Engine 4 that came out today had the nicest looking graphics I’ve ever seen ever. If CryTek top it, then great, even better looking games. But we haven’t seen anything of their new engine so them coming out and saying this was a bit obnoxious.

    • Missed the E3 vid of the unreal engine 4, will have to hunt it down.

      • Here it is ;) — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyeeyZE41O4

Looks great, will hopefully be the standard for Next-Gen!

      • Cheers, does look good.

      • it was a marvel :D I will still just wait and see as for now there is still not enough information on the subject of next gen, let alone how good the games will look on a, b or even c engine lol. But then again to SavageOranges post i agree

        so again

        How very dare they!

  3. Crytek can say all they want but i think next gen will have Unreal Engine 4 pretty much as a standard, much the same as Unreal 3 was this generation.

  4. I think if these next gen consoles were going to be as powerfull as a current PC They’d release the specs. I think both Sony and MS just want to release something with a balance of power and cost, meaning a console they can instantly sell for a profit. Most tech-ies forget the average consumer doesn’t care about CPU power, they only care about shinny graphics and price. I expect next gen will be more about networking, DRM, and micro-transactions then sheer processing power.

    • Perhaps the key for console makers is simply more console-exclusive games, if you can’t see the game running on an obviously superior PC then it’s no so much of a problem is it?

  5. lets see a video then like the one Epic released today.

    • They’re probably scaling it back, else we be dazzled by it’s graphical fidelity in such a way that we spontaneously combust.

  6. I don’t know why such discussions about a company’s own products cant be done with a little integrity and modesty. It’s not adding value to a product, and just comes across as childish :l

    • This. I get that Epic is “the competition” when it comes to games engines and licensing and whatever but if I was them and was touting CryEngine3 then I’d just show a vid that makes everyone else sit back and go “oh. Fuck”. If they can’t/won’t do that then sit back and be quiet I say.

  7. I’m guessing they plan on melting the PS4 and Nextbox via the Cryengine 3. As they did with PCs when Crysis 1 was released. ;)

I wonder if they are just heavily testing the capablities of the PS4 and the Bobbox to see how far they can push it next gen? Although, i’m a bit surprised that they’ve not released a video demostrating what they can do although, i wonder if Sony and MS have told them not to release any videos untill they offically announce the consoles?

  8. Do Epic consider them competition i wonder when only Crytek seem to use their tech, surely theres a ton of of different projects go into an engine when it becomes open to any dev?

  9. Better at making engines than the games that run in them

  10. The mind boggles at the thought of what next gen consoles….
