The specs for the PlayStation 4 have been announced.
- X86 CPU
- Supercharged PC architecture
- 8 Gig GDDR5 Memory
- Powerful APU (CPU and CPU combined) running at 2 teraflops
- Dedicated chip to encode video for sharing
The Dual Shock 4 has also been revealed with the rumoured touch pad, headphone jack, share button and light bar “to identify players”. A stereo camera bar has also been confirmed which will be used to track the controllers.
Basically, it’s bloody powerful.
“An informed system architecture was fundamental to the design of PlayStation 4” said Mark Cerny. He also showed off a million physics objects in Havoc, all executed using the GPU.
It looks like Sony have learned from their mistakes and have created a console that will be much easier to develop for.
Update: Sony have released the full list of specifications, confirming that the console will feature a Blu-ray drive.

No word on a physical format so far. I really hope they don’t go full digital…
DJ Judas
I went through the entire conference without realising this. It’d be borderline-suicide to go full digital in my opinion, no matter how seamless they claim their system for downloads to be.
It’s not just an infrastructure issue, I for one need another generation to get used to the idea of going solely digital. Force it on me and I’ll go elsewhere, give me the option and make it attractive to the point where I get used to purchasing digitally on my console over the next 6 years, and it then becomes MY choice to go digital only, not Sony’s.
XisTG
I’m there with you. As much as my internet connection is ready for that, my wallet isn’t. Being fully digital means I would have to pay through the nose for every single game, something that you don’t see at retail (albeit online retail).

wait, the post was updated while I slept: there is indeed a BD drive, all is well :)
DJ Judas
Ah yes, don’t remember it being said during the conference but it must be on the official spec-sheet.

The controller looks pretty good. Shame ustream caved, was the self promotion a bit too good from PlayStation?
ron_mcphatty
The streams are cracking under the pressure, maybe Sony were a bit too good at promoting tonight’s event? The controller looks nice!
Avenger
Yeah there have been a few issues with the Stream. The controller looks good but those analog sticks are pause for thought.
ron_mcphatty
Yeah, the new top just seems an unnecessary change. Apologies for the double post, got a bit eager there.

I like the look of the triggers. Look more like triggers than buttons (I’m one of those that has to buy the plastic clip on things ! Had them free with a mag once tried em and couldn’t go back!)
Motalla
So I can run ps4 games on my pc then ! The specs on my rig are better O:-)
Avenger
with a 167.5Gbit/s bandwidth via GDDR5 system RAM?
Avenger
I’m actually well amped for the PS4 (still depends on the price though for me) but it seems Sony are going full measure on everything they can do from remote play to video capture. Killzone Shadow wars just looks mind bogglingly mental…. and now I’m off to bed, oh well tomorrow’s news awaits.

Impressive specs, I wonder how the new Xbox will compare.

Who cares about the next Xbox!
MS will have to go some to beat Sony’s presentation.
Dom El
I think the key thing now is the price – can it possibly come in at anything reasonable with that level of technology in it? Especially given Sony’s losses this generation?
KeRaSh
8 GB of GDDR5 RAM. Booya!
TSBonyman
The demos showed how those specs add up to ‘stunning’.
Would have been nice to see the console but i guess they’ll reveal it at E3. Controller looks quite comfy.

AM i the only 1 annoyed that was a litle annoyed the touch pad was on the front rather than the rear of the pad like the ps vita?
I thought the idea of the touch pad was to add to game play by adding additional control options like being able to swipe left or right while still using analogue sticks and triggers to roll and aim at the same time ect. by keeping it on the front players will have to remove their thumbs from the analogue sticks and stretch the into the middle of the controller to do an awkward gesture. which in my opinion sounds like effort.
the only thing i can see the track pad being used is for gimmicky mini games or specific sections of gameplay designed specifically for it (and unless the new xbox has a trackpad too i cant see many developers doing that), i don’t see how it will “enhance” current gameplay or controller functionality
.
Shadow_lawless
remove the first *annoyed*,
add god forbid they design games which require you remove one hand from the controller to draw gestures on this touchpad just for the sake of it.
i can think of so many different things you could do simultaneously if the touch pad was on the back. FPS’ alone you’d be able to reload, roll, change weapon, select item, zoom scope, give commands to team and switch view all without removing your hands from those all important analogue sticks and shoulder buttons. all it would require is some creative gestures, double tap, triple tap, pinch, spread, swipe
