UK Charts 12/09/15: The Phantom Pain Still No1, Tearaway Unfolded Flops

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain claims a second week at the top but given the deluge of AAA releases in the next few months it’s unlikely to stay there for long. This is good news for me because I’m getting sick and tired of typing out the ridiculously long title for the game.

Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker crashes in at second place, pushing Mad Max to third and Disney Infinity 3.0 leap frogs up a spot to fourth, sliding Until Dawn down to the fifth position.

The only other new entry is Tearaway Unfolded which limps in at number 33, beaten by former stable-mate, Little Big Planet, which is at number 23. A quick survey among the TSA staff reveals none of us have seen an advert for Tearaway Unfolded which may explain it’s poor performance, a shame when it’s a rather good game.

  1. Shame about Unfolded, I’ve been playing it and have been surprised how wonderfully it’s transferred to the big screen – it looks fantastic! Also plays quite differently with the Dualshock 4 implementation replacing the Vita. My son loves it too, although he struggles a little with the drawing, as do I.

  2. Gamespot have been advertising Tearaway pretty heavily recently but otherwise I haven’t seen/heard anything about it. The game any good? It seemed a bit dull from the trailer to be honest.

  3. I decided to download the demo of Tearaway Unfolded at the weekend and I managed to play about 10 minutes before turning it off and deleting it.

I played and completed the original Tearaway on the Vita and thought it was just ok. There was something about the paper world that I found really dreary and depressing. I have no issues with the technical aspects of the game. It’s a very well made, imaginative spin on the 3d platformer – a genre I usually love – but it just wasn’t for me.

I’m sure it seemed like a good idea on paper (ba dum tish) but in reality it was all kinds of bland. I found the voice acting to be quite grating after a while and characters were flat and forgettable. It was really only saved only by utilising the Vita’s unique features. Take that away and all you have left is a rather drab experience.

    • Felt pretty much the same about Tearaway on the Vita, played through it once, but that was that.
And I’m not overly surprised, if it flops. In my view, the game has limited appeal for adults, and kids currently fare much better with a PS3.

  4. Extremely disappointing to see the magical Tearaway Unfolded so low on the chart, especially as Nintendo’s Mario-themed LBP rip-off managed 2nd.

    • Extremely disappointing to see the magical Splatoon so low on the chart, especially as Koji…Konami’s Anime-themed Splinter Cell rip-off managed 1st.

      • Well played, sir. I was only joking, but it is amusing that the Mario Maker advert even uses the ‘play, create, share’ phrasing. :)

      • Wasn’t Metal Gear along time before Splinter Cell?

      • Metal gear came first so technically splinter cell would be a rip off but both are good games in their perspective.

      • Yeah, that’s a bit cheeky. It’s written on the box as well.

(and yes, I know MGS came first. But it was the closest title I could think of genre-wise.)

  5. Didn’t bother with tearaway, people are saying its a different game but the fact that it’s not a sequel or anything but an extension of the vita, that alone was enough to buy something else

  6. It does feel TOTALLY different from the Vita version! I couldn’t even recognize the start of the PS4 version compared to the Vita one. The DS4 is incredibly well implemented on PS4 and it really deserves a second chance.

Besides, I think people are missing a point about the sale; on the Store (at least here in Denmark) it is much cheaper than the disc version. I’m pretty sure the September PSN Store download chart will draw a different picture (ba-dum tish).

  7. Agree with MOVE – so far I’m not far in but it genuinely feels like a completely different game. I hope it’s a slow burner on the charts I really do – this is why we’ll end up with COD: Paper Edition Zombie Mode and not a variety of games.
