Guitar Hero Live Won’t Have Paid DLC

FreeStyle Games has announced that Guitar Hero Live won’t demand monetary payment to unlock songs,  stating that players will be able to earn access to all songs within the game. The core of this experience will come from the Guitar Hero TV mode where players can play through channels curated by the developers. Playing these channels earns in game currency that can then be used to unlock songs, which allows you to strum along to that track at any time you want.

In GHTV, you no longer buy a song in the old DLC way – you don’t have to buy a song to sample or play it. You can play any channel for as long as you want. As you play in the channels, you earn in-game currency which quickly adds up, so you can get tokens to play any song from the GHTV library on-demand.

And we’re going to load you up with a bunch of play tokens the first time you play and as you rank up. The more you play, the more you earn. This freedom of choice wasn’t offered in the past. We hope people will love it…You never have to pay an extra dime after buying the base game and we will keep pumping new music into your living room.

There will be an option to purchase a party pass that unlocks the entire music library for a set duration, and would be best used when having a group over for a gathering.  As time goes on more channels will be added to GHTV meaning more songs that can be unlocked for free. This is a huge move by Activision and FreeStyle Games, and any response from Harmonix will be interesting to see.
