So far we’ve only seen Ellie as a playable character in Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II andcreative director Neil Druckmann has explicitly stated that “Ellie is the only playable character in the game,” which is a bit of a blow to fans of Joel.
However, Naughty Dog are not above a little deception and during interview with French games site Jeux Actu the game’s co-lead designer, Emilia Schatz, suggests that Mr. Druckmann may have to call the fire brigade to help extinguish his fire in his pants.
“Well, at this point, we’re just ready to show Ellie as a playable character,” said Emilia. “That may change in the future, but we’re not really ready to talk about that just yet, so I think there’s quite a lot about this game that has not yet been revealed.”
Whilst that does not confirm other playable characters Emilia is using the sort of language we are all familiar with, the type used when a developer is trying to avoid talking about a game element because the PR team don’t want them to. The give away phrase is “we’re not really ready to talk about that just yet,” which is text-book avoidance speech.
Rumours floating around suggest that there may be time jumps in the game and we may by playing as Ellie’s mother. Joel surely has to make an appearance, but where is he now?
