The Just Cause movie bags the writer of the John Wick films

The Just Cause movie, which has been hanging around in development hell since it was announced in 2015, has finally picked a writer and it’s a good one. Derek Kolstad, writer of all three rather good John Wick movies has been hired to write the script for Germany’s Constantin Film.

When the film was originally revealed it was going to be based on Just Cause 3 but as we’ve had another game since then that may no longer be the case.

“Just Cause 3 has a terrific story. It has Rico going back to Medici, the place of his birth and then subsequent displacement, and the murder of his family,” said producer, Adrian Askarieh at the time. “He goes back there to do what he does best which is to discombobulate regimes. I’ve always loved the story of the Scorpion, because I haven’t seen a movie about a guy you send in to tear people apart from within.”

“That to me is a cool story and the whole concept of a guy who is sent in to discombobulate from within and to create chaos from within. And in terms of action, I think Just Cause has just as much right to be called an action movie as The Fast and Furious. They’re both outlandish.”

Brad Peyton is on directing duties having previously worked on the bombastic San Andreas and it was recently announced Jason Momoa, star of Game of Thrones and Aquaman, has been cast as Rico. A slightly odd casting given Rico’s rather strong accent in the games, Mamoa does not sound, or indeed look, anything like Rico “The Scorpion” Rodriguez.

The producers are hoping this will be the first of a franchise of movies based on the games. “The project is a top priority for Constantin and will start filming in 2020,” say Variety.
