In a third quarter earnings call CD Projekt Board member Michał Nowakowski responded to a question as to how the company will be responding to the launch of the next gen consoles in 2020, specifically in regards to Cyberpunk 2077.
“Of course we do have insight into what’s around the corner, into what’s happening with PlayStation and Xbox, and we are watching it closely, and one may probably safely assume that at some point we may do something with next-gen,” said Nowakowski. “However we cannot really be very specific what that may be, when exactly that may be.I will only safely assume that it’s definitely not going to be around the launch timeframe of these consoles, so I think that’s pretty much it.”
“Our games were always kind of ahead of technology; they were always played best on strong PCs, so in many areas we are kind of ready or almost ready for stronger specs – so, from a technical perspective this seems to be doable,” added CD Projekt president and joint-CEO Adam Kiciński.
The game will be launching on current gen consoles and PC in April 2020, and a release on Stadia will follow after that. However, anyone hoping for a Witcher 3-like port to Nintendo Switch is going to be disappointed as CD Projekt Red’s Krakow head John Mamais has said it was unlikely.
An attendee at a CD Projekt community event in Poland has posted on Reddit that he was told the main story for Cyberpunk 2077 is shorter than that of the Witcher 3 but has high replayability.
I think it’s a good bet to assume that any big game coming out next year on current gen tech will probably get a next gen version as well. We already know some titles, such as Dying Light 2, will be multi-generational.
