Konami and Bloober Team announce partnership as Silent Hill rumours get louder

Horror game studio Bloober Team and publisher Konami Digital Entertainment have announced a ‘strategic partnership’ that could see the a game from the dormant Silent Hill IP developed by the creators of Blair Witch and The Medium.

In fact, that’s exactly what the insider understanding is, as VGC reports that “people with knowledge” state that one of Bloober Team’s upcoming projects is Silent Hill related. However, they are not the only studio working on a Silent Hill game.

Of course, at this point Konami and Bloober have not announced any specific games, and the press release simply states that they will be “jointly developing selected contents and exchanging know-how.”

Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno said, “It is a historic day for me and the culmination of several years of our work. The fact that such a renowned company as KONAMI has decided to strategically cooperate with the Bloober Team means that we also joined the world leaders in gaming and became an equal partner for the leading players in this market.”

In a further clarification provided to us about the partnership, Konami said, “We are excited to work with Bloober Team and other highly regarded development partners to produce games from existing and new IPs.”

Silent Hill Downpour

The Silent Hill franchise has been dormant for almost a decade since Silent Hill: Downpour’s 2012 release.

There were already rumours that Bloober were working on Silent Hill, after they said back in February that they were working on an existing horror IP from a “famous gaming publisher.”

Bloober Team has a growing reputation in the games industry, having found themselves a niche within the psychological horror genre. This started with the release of Layers of Fear in 2016 and Observer in 2017. It’s also worth noting that Bloober recently signed with Koch Media in a distribution deal for The Medium and other titles, so their work with Konami is not them fishing for a publisher.

The Medium

Bloober Team’s The Medium featured a unique dual-reality mechanic.

Most recently, Bloober Team released The Medium for Xbox Series X|S and PC – though the timed exclusivity will end in September with a PlayStation 5 release – a game with a unique dual-reality system for its particular take on horror. In our The Medium review, Steve wrote:

“The Medium is a really good horror adventure with some stand out ideas and excellent presentation. It makes the most of its influences to create an atmospheric and involving narrative, but its wider context as a next-gen exclusive may lead many to expect it to be a grander step forward than it is. Taken on its own merits, and particularly for genre fans, this is a genuinely great game and I look forward to replaying it to take in all the amazing details and touches that I may have missed first time through. With some questions left unanswered, I hope it does well and develops into a franchise.”
