The original Fortnite Save the World game mode is now free to play, available across PS5, PS4, Xbox Series XS, Xbox One, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PC, GeForce Now, and Amazon Luna… and Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time. It is not, however, playable on smartphones, tablets, or the original Switch.
While Fortnite has morphed into a broad collection of games and experiences over the last few years, the Battle Royale mode remains the main meal for most players… but that’s not where Fortnite started. Before the Battle Royale came along to eat PUBG’s lunch, Fortnite was revealed and released as a paid co-op horde mode game, Save the World, where you’d team up with other players to build forts and fight back against monsters.
Save the World hasn’t really been a main focus for Epic for a long time – there was even a Save Save the World community campaign back in 2020 – but making it free to play gives it another chance to find a broader audience, and there’s now crossover Quests coming that will bridge Save the World and Battle Royale.
As part of making Save the World free for all, Epic has dished out some items for both existing owner, and for newcomers who pre-registered over the last few weeks.
These include for existing users:
- 1x Hero Supercharger – Promote a Hero beyond Level 50.
- 1x Weapon Supercharger – Promote a weapon beyond Level 50.
- 1x Trap Supercharger – Promote a Trap beyond Level 50.
- 5x Survivor Supercharger – Promote Survivors beyond Level 50.
- 1x Hero Recruitment Voucher – Recruit a Hero of your choice.
- 1x Weapon Research Voucher – Unlock a weapon of your choice.
- 10000 Gold – Spend in the Event Store (to be renamed “the Exchange”) for valuable items.
And all players, old and new, who signed up for pre-registration earned the Kyle’s Construction Spray, a Save The World Jess Banner, and the Snowstrike Hero, which has the following perks:
- Standard Perk: North Star
- Throwing Stars will slow enemies for 4 seconds instead of dealing damage. Slowed-down enemies will explode for 167 base water damage if they receive melee damage or damage from another North Star explosion.
- Commander Perk: North Star+
- Throwing Stars will freeze enemies for 4 seconds instead of dealing damage. Frozen enemies will explode for 167 base water damage if they receive melee damage or damage from another North Star explosion.
