Black Ops and Black Ops II are being ported to PS4 and PS5

Treyarch have announced, rather quietly via a tweet, that the original Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II are being ported to PlayStation 4 and 5.

Black Ops and Black Ops II will be available in July and will feature the full package of a single player campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes. The price was not revealed.

Now I know what you are thinking; Microsoft own Activision, so why on earth are they porting old COD games just to PlayStation 5? Well, it’s worth emphasising that these are being announced as ports, not remakes or even as remasters. That means you should expect very few enhancements to the games, and that they should drop into the same online multiplayer networking set up as before – for better or for worse.

As for Xbox? Well, you can already play these two Xbox 360 games via Xbox backwards compatibility, so there’s less need to port these games there, but Black Ops and Black Ops 2 were not given any kind of enhancements through the BC programme, so they run at the original resolution and frame rate targets – base resolutions of 1040×600 for Black Ops and 880×720 for Black Ops 2 per Digital Foundry.

The PS3 version of Black Ops ran at a mere 960×540, and surely the PS4 and PS5 ports will run at better resolutions than that This would then get PlayStation a leg up on Xbox.

So it’s all a rather odd announcement, given that Xbox is trying to claw back exclusives and that you can’t play the games on current-gen PlayStation, it does mean BLOPS and BLOPS 2 are sort of exclusive to Xbox right now, and they’re likely giving up on feature parity as they do so. very strange.

Anyway, these are still two of the most popular Call of Duty games, especially with the Black Ops storyline has gone off in some very strange directions over the years. Will you want to revisit them on current PlayStations?
