Vault Breaker, Bungie‘s new experimental PvE game mode for Marathon, will stay online according the extraction shooter’s development team.
Originally, it was meant to be available for just a couple of weeks – going live on July 21st and ending on August 4th – though Bungie has now extended that deadline until the middle of next month, on August 18th. Here’s the official statement from the Marathon development team:
“You’ve spent the last week putting Vault Breaker through its paces in Cryo and giving us a valuable look at how this experimental PvE mode is landing.
Because of that, Vault Breaker will remain live until August 18.
Thanks for investing your time, sharing your perspective, and continuing to help us learn. We appreciate the partnership and are taking your feedback with us as we keep building.”
For those who missed the recent update, Vault Breaker is giving Marathon players a glimpse at how the game’s PvE experience will take shape going into September’s Season 3. The experimental mode allows Runners to delve into the maze-like Cryo Archive, a map previously reserved for Marathon’s highest threat, endgame PvP skirmishes. Players are tasked with exploring its depth to unlock Vaults and steal valuable data before exfiltrating.
We came away from the PvE mode feeling a little disappointed. While it’s great to have more casual players finally visit the Cryo Archive, it’s tough to decipher exactly what this mode wants players to do, failing to provide a worthwhile alternative for those who maybe aren’t keen on Marathon’s punishing PvP bouts. With that said, Vault Breaker is clearly labelled as an experiment. All eyes now turn to Bungie as the studio prepares to lay out its plans for Marathon Season 3, which will also see the arrival of a new Shell (character class) as well as bonus weapons, gear, and an overhaul to its early game experience.
