Partnering with Russian developer Biart Studio LLC, 505 Games will publish Deep Black for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Claiming to be a world’s first (we’re skeptical), players will be able to enjoy the thrills of a third person action shooter in an underwater setting. So, like BioShock but with a couple of more dimensions. The game is set for a Q1 2011 release and promises “action-packed battles with an immersive story line, of complex science-fiction mystery, espionage and bio-terror.” So, like Hydrophobia then.
Our Russian comrades will also deliver “realistic physics in an underwater environment bringing new “depths” to in-game challenges.” We see what you did there.
Here’s some more blurb from the release:
Players will take to the murky depths armed with a wrath of underwater equipment from specialized underwater jet-packs with integrated harpoons, mini submersibles and other high tech equipment in pursuit of enemies. With the majority of the game play taking place below the water’s surface, action-adventure fans will need to master new skills to fight hostile enemies and infiltrate enemy bases.
How about a couple of screens that might spark some interest?

That first screen looks like Underwater Dead Space.
Barbs80
exactly my first thought
lewis815
Wow Kovacs you are obviously brimming with excitement for this :P
Kovacs
There was actually very little in the release! But I’ll give every game a chance.
:)

Don’t jet-packs aka JETS need compressed AIR to work, there would not be enough oxygen to sustain a jet engine, I’m looking into it to much because I think it looks awful and will be a big flop, In my opinion.
Kovacs
Water-packs? Does that work?
Apnomis
No, Jet-packs is fine. Marine jet propulsion is the latest in underwater vehicle technology to replace the propeller system.
To paraphase Google for a moment – Marine Jet Propulsion is a function of differences in the mass-flow of water. Water enters and exits a jet drive at differing velocities, power is converted to thrust via an impeller, and the thrust propels the boat. Steering right and left is accomplished by directing the system’s exit flow in one direction or the other, much like directing the thrust of a submerged propeller-driven system. Forward and reverse motion is infinitely controllable through a reverse deflector that simply diverts the thrust fore or aft.
Ryan1991
How can you tell it will be a big flop from two screens and a small press release? Plus, it’s the first you’ve heard of the game.
icuyesido
I said ‘I think’ and ‘In my opinion’ I think it will be a flop because without even looking at it if you said it was entirely set under water you would presume and seems as ‘it’s the first I’ve heard of it’ I’m aloud to presume that it would be slow, repetitive and generally boring, when companies are coming up with ideas for a consumer they imitate what the consumer already has because that is what there used to, that is what they like, it’s much easier for a gaming company to sell a first person shooter than an underwater first person shooter because people don’t like change and that’s why you don’t see many unusual/new games out there, that’s why I’ll think it will be a flop because it doesn’t fit in with what people are used to and people only get used to things they like, so why would they want to change. Remember this is only an opinion/first judgement and 99% of the people who read this article would have made an initial judgement….I was the only one who wrote it down and for so reason it seemed to annoy you.
bunimomike
I think the guys were taken aback with how strong an opinion you had from very little information. You raise some good points but we’ve been shown so little, let’s all just see how things flesh out and go from there. *passes around happy pills*
icuyesido
Can I have two happy pills, that sort of turned into a rant! =D
lewis815
I think if its done well it has the potential to be a very good game.
But for me, it would need a solid in-depth storyline, varied gameplay (not just shoot whatever is in front of you), and a bit of character ! All my fave games have a bit of life to them. :)
Amphlett
If this truly is the first underwater FPS then good luck to them. I would just sound a note of caution though and ask them why, after so many years of gaming, no one else has made such a game…
Kovacs
TPS.
:)

Underwater sections are always the worst part of any game from Tomb Raider to God Of War.
A whole game based underwater? Sadly, my preconceptions mean I’m already counted out
scavenga
+ 1 on the underwater sections, always a pain.
lewis815
Good point..
bajere
thats what i was going to say. Unless the guys wearing some sort of special suit, underwater battles will be slow and annoying
Winkle
Syphon Filter Logan’s Shadow underwater sections were fun!
scavenga
Oh, I remember 505 – they provided us with epic titles such as… Errr, eh…
…The Oneechanbara…
They’re doing Naughty Bear though, so maybe..?
cc_star
Naughty Bear is out, and has some of the lowest reviews scores this gen
billsmugs
“With the majority of the game play taking place below the water’s surface, action-adventure fans will need to ***master new skills*** to […] infiltrate enemy bases.”
Err, swim over the walls? :D
This does look as if it could be quite good though.
Floms
cool theres no underwater game in the market so its a good idea bringing something new to the table
PoorPaddy89
The robot is straight from Jedi Power Battles, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it looked like others too.
stingraz
lets hope this isn’t as bad as Naughty Bear then..
