Shigenobu Matsuyama (Producer) has been interviewed by Kotaku. In amongst the claims that Metal Gear: Rising is going to make some bold changes to the key gameplay of the series so far is this handy little quote:
You could actually have a no-kill completion [in Rising]. There will be a lot of mechs and cyborgs, but if you slice them up, that will be considered as a no-kill as well. You’ll have the freedom of killing humans, of course, but you can proceed through the game without killing a human being, but slicing up mechs and cyborgs.
So you can run through the game only killing robots and never physically harming a human enemy. Matsuyama also mentioned the options available to get around enemies, including cutting their weapons or simply looking so hard and ninja-like that they run away (hopefully peeing themselves as they go). It’s not all about letting you get to the end with a clean conscience though. Matsuyama also wants enemies to clearly express pain so that the game isn’t just “slice ’em up, dice ’em up” and the player can see the consequences of their actions.
Matsuyama is keen to point out that although he won’t be censoring or editing the graphical violence in order to achieve a lower age-rating, he doesn’t want there to be rewards for killing human enemies.
I want to emphasize that I will never reward a player for killing human beings in the game. I won’t make it easier to clear the game [that way]. I will probably make it more difficult.
So that’s graphic violence, stealthy ninjas that are so mean-looking people run away and the full consequences of our actions being shown by pained yelps coming from our enemies. Sounds like a winner to me.
Aquastyle
Yeah, defiantely a winner, looking forward to this.
I’m not so sure if I’m gonna be able to play through it without killing any humans though, the swordplay looks too awesome.

Wasn’t it possible to complete Metal Gear Solid and 2 without killing humans (except boss battles)?
PoorPaddy89
Can do with all of them except #1, where you had to kill some soldiers just after you meet Meryl.
Deathbrin
Can’t you just throw ’em?
PoorPaddy89
Can’t remember. Possibly. But even so, you definately have to kill the bosses.
cc_star
I’m not a fan of stealth sections of games (I’m just no good at it, as I usually miss a headshot and end up alerting more enemies) so I’m not sure this will be for me.
STILLCANTTHINKOFAGOODPSNNAME
dont think you can miss headshots with swords especially in slomo
hazelam
you don’t want headshots when you’re using a sword, it gets stuck in the skull, is hard to get out, and makes a lot of mess when it does.
uhm, i would imagine, having never even done anything like that myself.
i saw it in a movie, yeah…. a movie. >_>
Deathbrin
Whoa, an impressive advice.
PoorPaddy89
Looking forward to this more and more, although I still want an actual MGS5. On home console rather than PSP, please. Peace Walker is absolutely incredible, but would be 1000 times better on PS3.
solidsteven
+1
SmokeyPSD
meh, if peace walker is the last true mgs game we get, I’m happy with that.
Deathbrin
It would not if they keep it as it is – it is clearly a PSP game, from extra ops inbetween main missions to the MSF entrance exams. It is made for the format.
PoorPaddy89
Absolutely no reason why it wouldn’t work on a home console. Even many of the missions are shorter, some can still end up lasting half-hour, even without cutscenes. They’d have to rework recruitment, but I’m sure they can do so. Kojima has said he had to cut a ton of stuff from it that he found not possible to do, which would be possible on PS3.
Deathbrin
It would work some other way, not being the Peace Walker we know – thus not being Peace Walker altogether.
david
Oh thats just great!!! Now there will be a trophy (gold) for completing the game without killing anyone…
=(
Jordaaaan
Yeah, and then it’s on to completing the game on Extreme which will probably mean if you get hit once, you die considering this game doesn’t seem to be hung up too much on stealth.
FLUFFYB1TCH
The previous games made you play through that way if you wanted to unlock everything anyway! At least this time I’ll get a freakin trophy for doing it!
BioEye
If the mechanoids are similar to the Metal Gear Gekkos in MGS4, then they’re part living, part machine. That means you’re still killing something. And then there’s the moral question, is it ok to kill something even if it has no consciousness?
Deathbrin
Like slicing a dead hand?
Klart
And their first video shows lots of humans being sliced like a tomato. A bit hypocrit. Still looking forward to this.
Jordaaaan
Mmm, no. They’re simply stating that you can, not kill people. Not that you shouldn’t.
YOURMUMANDME
So Alan Titchmarsh, stick that in your pipe and smoke it !
SmokeyPSD
every interview with this guy just makes me hate the idea of rising more…
Cyborgs are humans too, I mean come on. They should be counted as kills… ARGH anybody with a bit of knowledge of scifi would know cyborgs are still human, just augmented.
DuffyBox
I thought Rising’s cyborgs were closer to robots augmented with organic parts?
Deathbrin
You could consider Raiden a cyborg himself? Since he’s a “cyborg ninja” after…
grogy86
I ll be picking this up at some point
