Ubisoft Announce Uplay Online Pass

Ubisoft will have their own ‘online pass’ in the form of Uplay Passport, it’s been revealed.

Driver: San Francisco will be one of the first to use the system, which will lock out multiplayer to anyone that hasn’t got a code, obviously something new copies of the game will come with.

It’s a hot topic here at TSA, with many readers discussing the pros and cons of such schemes (and in particular Sony’s PSN Pass) but one thing’s for sure – it’s here to stay.

The move follows EA, THQ, Codemasters and Sony, who are all now experimenting with similar ideas at different levels.

  1. I think it will be more surprising if there isn’t a game that uses a pass system.

  2. lol, awesome

    round 3

    fight

  3. Fair play is what they should have all called their passes…..would be easier for everyone to accept. I dont mind tho, its still a trick missed.

    • What, like Apple’s old Fairplay DRM? The one that everyone fixated upon as the embodiment of evil and the end of the world, despite it being 20x more flexible than the rest of the industry was at that time.

    • I mind… I want to buy NFS Hot Pursuit Pre-Owned, and the thing that puts me out it’s the Online Pass… Just going to wait until the price gets lower of the game new.

      • Thats cool, totally understandable. I buy new, but I do see how it can upset gamers who for whatever reason choose to buy preowned. The old games market could sky rocket?

      • £17.99 at Game so guessing it’s even cheaper elsewhere now… Tempting.

  4. saw this in my crystal ball just after the sony announcement.

  5. Roll on the ‘this is illegal’ comments lol

    • I don’t care if it’s legal or not, its just that it makes them greedy a__holes.

      • agreed,

      • Thirded

      • Forthed of quaded?

      • No, I don’t think it does. You want to use their servers & services? Give them some bloody money for it! If you bought a second hand car you wouldn’t expect the manufacturer to pick up the tab if it needed a service would you?… I just don’t get why people moan about this. If you wanted to play a game that much you’d buy it new in the first place. Besides, it’s nearly always cheaper to get the pre-owned and the pass anyways

  6. *sigh*

  7. No surprises there in my opinion. Then again, I don’t mind that much either.

  8. And so it begins….

  9. Well, there IS one thing that differentiates this from the rest. The name is the worst out of all online pass systems X).

  10. Not as bad as their absurd DRM! Online passes aren’t a bad idea as particularly in stores pre owned is only £2-£5 cheaper than new. Do many people buy pre owned?

    • I buy preowned from work, which is the lowest amazon price minus 25% (also no postage) so I can get around 10 older games for the price of a new game, around £40. Screw this code system an roll on the keygens!

      • Thief

      • Sorry, what exactly am I stealing?

      • Keygens. Dont’t play dumb.

      • What if your keygen “gens” a legit code from the back of somebody’s manual? You screw-over a real person who bought the game with their hard-earned cash. Think it through

    • i buy lots of preowned, but when i buy them they’re months and years old.

hell, i bought a saturn game the other week, duke nukem 3d. ^_^

if i want a new game, i’ll buy it if i can afford it, if not, i’ll wait.
