Square Enix President and CEO Yoichi Wada has been talking to Edge about his plans for the company and they include waving goodbye to Final Fantasy in its current form.
“I believe Final Fantasy XIII is going be something special,” he said, “And that it’s going to be well received by the audience. But whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy XIII should next move on to create and generate some ‘next generation’ forms of play. Internally and externally I feel there’s an expectation of Square Enix to offer something new, and I really think that the Final Fantasy team could create something completely different, but at the moment they’re strictly catering to the particular audience they have now.”
Have a stiff drink and a sit down whilst you assimilate that news. The boss of Square Enix wants to move the Final Fantasy team on to new projects. Before you start hugging your limited edition Tifa statuettes and crying like babies there is one small glimmer of hope. When asked if western developers could take over an existing Sqaure Enix franchise, Wada said,
“That is one of the possible paths, but it’s not something that we would shift completely over to. But there are many combinations of ways to handle an IP. We’re not considering it at the moment, but there is always the possibility that in the future a Final Fantasy could be produced with the input of our western developers, overseen by our Japanese developers.”

The last thing people would want is for them to westernise FF. If they fucked it up… there would be quite a few angry fans XP Me included.

I hope not…
I’m looking forward to XIII but the recent release in Japan has kinda made me less excited since it hasn’t gone down too well, and from what I’ve heard, rightly so. And considering XIV is an MMO, it would be nice to have at least ONE more great Final Fantasy. In my opinion, if you’re going to end the franchise, do it on a number like XV. It’s a factor of 5 and 5 is a good number :p. Plus I want something similar to 7-9. I miss those days so a throwback to them would be amazing. Maybe call it The Final Fantasy and have Final Fantasy XV as the sub-title underneath. Just don’t end on XIII/XIV please…
But I doubt it’ll be the end anyway. Didn’t the other week they say they wanted FF to last forever and be talked about in a thousand years time like history? lol

Excuse my maths, 15 is a multiple of 5, not a factor :p

So then 5 is a factor of 15.

I can remember this being the case almost a decade ago , all along there were no plans to take the series past XIII and i was really shocked at the announcement of XIV this year .

Moving to new franchises? Sounds good, maybe they can revive some PSX days games for the new generation. Final Fantasy games produced by western studios? Hell no! The only reason I play those is exactly because they are *not* produced by western studios.

Well now anyone on the fence about Final Fantasy 13 will feel obliged to buy it since it’s ‘the last one’.

I am willing to bet people some money that it’ll be a f*ck*ng first-person shooter.
