Reuters is reporting this morning that Sony is about to post an operating profit of about 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) for its last quarter (October-December), apparently helped by a recovery in its PlayStation and TV operations.  The story, originating from Nikkei overnight, means that this will be the company’s first profit in five quarters.

Sales of the PS3 grew sharply following the remodel and the price cuts, bringing about a profit in the separate video game division for the first time in a year.  The report from Sony will be issued on the 4th of February, but in the meantime Sony shares were up 4.4 percent (at 3,070 yen) outperforming the Tokyo stock market’s electrical machinery index, which rose just 2.5 percent.
